What this calculator works out

Useful for anyone pricing materials, products or subcontracted work from a known cost base.

Calculation: Selling price = cost × (1 + markup rate). Margin = profit ÷ selling price.

Practical example

A 40% markup on a 500 cost adds 200 and creates a 700 selling price. The resulting margin is 28.57%, not 40%.

Use the result carefully

  • Include labour and overhead where they are part of delivering the item.
  • Markup and margin use different denominators.
  • The selling price shown is before any tax.
